Paru en 1967, Le Fils d'Agatha Moudio a obtenu, en 1968, le Grand Prix littéraire de l'Afrique noire. En 1976, il en était déjà rendu à sa cinquième édition et était traduit en anglais, en allemand et en polonais. Le Fils d'Agatha Moudio représente un renouvellement important de l'esthétique romanesque africaine.
Au centre de ce roman, un jeune Africain qui se trouve « au carrefour des temps anciens et modernes » et dont Francis Bebey conte l'histoire dans la meilleure tradition des aèdes africains.

Francis Bebey est décédé le 28 mai 2001 à l'âge de 72 ans.
